Department of Public Health
North South University
World’s Centre of Public Health Research

Established in 1993, North South University (NSU) has one of the strongest research and teaching faculties in Asia. The Department of Public Health, under the School of Health and Life Sciences (SHLS), is a regional and global leader in public health education, research, and service with the largest concentration of academic, population, and public health researchers in Bangladesh. In 2025, Times Higher Education (THE) ranked NSU in the 401–500 band worldwide in the "Medical and Health" subject category- marking us the university’s highest performing school across all faculty.

Building on its long-standing excellence in graduate education, the Department now offers three academic programs- Bachelor of Public Health (BPH), Master of Public Health (MPH) and Executive Master of Public Health (EMPH)

The newly launched Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) program expands NSU’s commitment to developing future public health leaders by providing high-quality undergraduate education rooted in scientific rigor, hands-on experience, and global perspectives. Together, these programs train the next generation of educators, scientists, and practitioners who will advance health equity and improve population health in Bangladesh and beyond.

The department fosters an intellectual environment unmatched in depth and breadth among universities in Bangladesh. Our faculty members are national and international leaders in public health research and practice, representing diverse backgrounds across the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and life sciences. The department’s work spans chronic and infectious diseases, clinical epidemiology, health policy, social determinants of health, global health, occupational and environmental health, and biostatistics, with collaborations involving global institutions and national agencies.

Graduates of our programs emerge not just with a degree, but with the expertise, leadership, and confidence to drive change in governments, international organizations, NGOs, and other esteemed institutions worldwide

We invite you to explore our website and connect with our program administrators and faculty to learn more about our education, research, and training opportunities that continue to shape the future of public health.

Chairman's Message

Health is the foundation of human progress, and population health defines the prosperity of a nation. Guided by this conviction, the Department of Public Health at North South University (NSU), under the School of Health and Life Sciences, is deeply committed to advancing health equity, scientific excellence, and community well-being through education, research, and policy engagement.

Our faculty, scholars, and students work collectively on some of the most pressing public health challenges of our time: communicable and non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, environmental health and climate resilience, disaster preparedness, health systems strengthening, and emerging health threats such as antimicrobial resistance and pandemic preparedness. We recognize that Bangladesh, positioned at the intersection of rapid urbanization, climate vulnerability, and demographic transition, offers both unique challenges and remarkable opportunities for transformative public health practice.

At NSU, we emphasize research-driven and community-centered learning. Our Master of Public Health (MPH) and Executive Master of Public Health (EMPH) programs are designed to integrate global standards of public health education with the contextual realities of Bangladesh and South Asia. Through field attachments, policy simulations, and applied research, our graduates acquire the knowledge, analytical capacity, and leadership skills to serve in national and international organizations including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, DGHS, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, USAID, Save the Children, icddr,b, BRAC, and other reputed institutions. Many of our alumni have pursued further studies or collaborations with leading global universities such as Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, and the University of Toronto.

It is my great joy to announce that starting January 2026 (Spring 2026), we are going to launch a brand-new program, the Bachelor of Public Health (BPH), which we aim to establish as a flagship program not only at NSU but also nationally.

Our department takes pride in its distinguished faculty, educators, researchers, and practitioners from Bangladesh and around the world, who bring a wealth of multidisciplinary expertise to our classrooms and research projects. We are expanding our focus on digital health, urban health equity, planetary health, and implementation research, aligning our mission with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Bangladesh’s Vision 2041 for a healthier, more resilient nation.

We welcome passionate students, researchers, and professionals to join us in shaping the future of public health, locally, regionally, and globally. Together, we aim to generate knowledge, strengthen systems, and empower communities to achieve the highest attainable standard of health for all.

I invite you to explore our programs, publications, and initiatives through our website, and to engage with us in this vital journey of learning, innovation, and service.
